I haven't done a book review since October 2020. What the actual hell. Well, life has definitely gotten in the way - two granddaughters under two have been life changing in the best of ways.</div><div>But I haven't stopped reading! I'm actually reading more than ever. I've also started reading some thriller and horror this year, and I'm enjoying scaring myself. </div><h2 style="text-align: left;">The Final Girls Support Group by Grady Hendrix</h2><h4 style="text-align: left;">What They Say - <span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(24, 24, 24); color: #181818; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, serif; font-size: 14px;">In horror movies, the final girl is the one who's left standing when the credits roll. The one who fought back, defeated the killer, and avenged her friends. The one who emerges bloodied but victorious. But after the sirens fade and the audience moves on, what happens to her?</span></h4><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(24, 24, 24); color: #181818; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, serif; font-size: 14px;">Lynnette Tarkington is a real-life final girl who survived a massacre twenty-two years ago, and it has defined every day of her life since. And she's not alone. For more than a decade she's been meeting with five other actual final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable, putting their lives back together, piece by piece. That is until one of the women misses a meeting and Lynnette's worst fears are realized--someone knows about the group and is determined to take their lives apart again, piece by piece.</span><br style="caret-color: rgb(24, 24, 24); color: #181818; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, serif; font-size: 14px;" /><br style="caret-color: rgb(24, 24, 24); color: #181818; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, serif; font-size: 14px;" /><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(24, 24, 24); color: #181818; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, serif; font-size: 14px;">But the thing about these final girls is that they have each other now, and no matter how bad the odds, how dark the night, how sharp the knife, they will never, ever give up.</span><h4 style="text-align: left;">What I Say.... Okay, this one was good. At first, I found Lynnette to be an unreliable narrator, and thought that was going to be the story, me wondering what was real and what wasn't. Lynnette is beyond cautious and beyond paranoid, but with good reason. She had a close encounter with a serial killer twenty two years ago, and now feels the world is crawling with monsters just waiting for you to let your guard down. </h4><div>Lynnette's one weekly outing is a Final Girls support group is run by a psychologist who wrote a book about the girls, and continues to work with them for free. But these are not emotionally healthy girls, no matter how much therapy they've had. They don't even like each other all that much, and they are all in different phases of healing, as well as different walks of life. Suddenly, one of them stops showing up at group, and Lynnette is instantly convinced she's been found by her serial killer. Not everyone agrees, and the group starts to splinter even faster. </div><div><br /></div><div>But when it turns out that she was murdered, the group starts to tailspin even faster. No spoilers here, but you are reading about some seriously emotionally unhealthy people, some of whom don't even want to be tied to each other anymore.</div><div><br /></div><div>I honestly wasn't rooting for any of the characters - Lynnette was just too broken to even be likable. She talked to a cactus like it was her best friend and lived in a cage, but then she went into the woods to an absolute freak show of two human beings purposefully. </div><div><br /></div><div>The closure was great - it all wrapped up really well and I was actually surprised at the killer. Sometimes you can tell where it's going and finishing the book becomes a chore, but I would say the last chapters were the best in the whole book. I give it 3 stars.</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/55829194-the-final-girl-support-group?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=bofzkPLgGe&rank=2" target="_blank">Current Goodreads Rating 3.82</a><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><img alt="photo signature_zpsc91ef999.png" border="0" src="http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc454/pianoprincessdesigns/signature_zpsc91ef999.png~original" />A Nurse and A Bookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16529695425968682070noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4739476172404875451.post-69154208759599238182020-10-04T20:31:00.003-07:002020-10-04T20:32:43.077-07:00The Wife Who Knew Too Much by Michele Campbell<span><a name='more'></a></span><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0WVNI2XrWkLiBsxyuxKj3qy3rESCXLTgwPl2BkTrS0lMWMXAacNCYr0k85bxlvRPasIijwItsDLEjgXyPN32JGGAL7wKArnyYrZNF6r2FaRTcE4wAicvDtNN_XP7cjTWAIRHX2E4SKivQ/s388/cover184908-medium+%25281%2529.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="388" data-original-width="255" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0WVNI2XrWkLiBsxyuxKj3qy3rESCXLTgwPl2BkTrS0lMWMXAacNCYr0k85bxlvRPasIijwItsDLEjgXyPN32JGGAL7wKArnyYrZNF6r2FaRTcE4wAicvDtNN_XP7cjTWAIRHX2E4SKivQ/s320/cover184908-medium+%25281%2529.png" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><div class="row" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span itemprop="bookFormat">Hardcover</span>, <span itemprop="numberOfPages">336 pages</span></div><div class="row" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif;">Published July 28th 2020 by St. Martin's Press</div></div><p style="text-align: left;"><br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">What They Say....</span></h3><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="background-color: white; font-weight: normal;">Tabitha Girard had her heart broken years ago by Connor Ford. He can finally be with Tabitha. Nina’s home, Windswept, can be theirs. It seems to be a perfect ending to a fairy tale romance that began so many years ago. But then, Tabitha finds a diary. "I’m writing this to raise an alarm in the event of my untimely death," it begins. “If I die unexpectedly, it was foul play, and Connor was behind it. Connor—and her.”</span></p><p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 12px; outline: none; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Who is Connor Ford? I liked the cover and the description, so I gave it a shot. And found a new favorite. Once I was done, I immediately downloaded some of her other books (<a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31451082-it-s-always-the-husband" target="_blank">It's Always the Husband</a>, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36476218-she-was-the-quiet-one" target="_blank">She Was the Quiet One</a>). I liked her that much. </span></span></p><div><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Tabitha is working as a waitress, down on her luck, and feeling pretty bad about herself when her high school boyfriend comes into her restaurant. </span></span></div><div><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">He's richer than ever, married into more money, but he remembers Tabitha, just as she remembers him. They rekindle their romance, and he shares his "woe is me" marriage story.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">It seems like they are going to get their happy ending, Connor's wife commits suicide, and he immediately moves Tabitha in. Despite how this sounds, I still found Tabitha a sympathetic character. She's way out of her league in Connors' life and she knows it. Then she find's his wife's diary, starting Tabitha on a path of doubt.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">The thing I really liked about this book was that in reading the synopsis, you think you know what's going to happen - but you don't. The twists and turns don't stop coming. </span></span></div><div><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">I would categorize this as a great cozy read for the fall - curl up under a blanket and enjoy!</span></span></div><div><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></span></div><div><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51174531-the-wife-who-knew-too-much" target="_blank">Current Goodreads Rating 3.75</a></div><div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><img alt="photo signature_zpsc91ef999.png" border="0" src="http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc454/pianoprincessdesigns/signature_zpsc91ef999.png~original" />A Nurse and A Bookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16529695425968682070noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4739476172404875451.post-46695561450371318452020-08-19T20:17:00.005-07:002020-08-19T20:17:48.391-07:00The Daughters of Foxcote Manor by Eve Chase<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirWik7UooXBH6QkSoORF_ScZGdRMaNCPmiT2i5DxuG0AnkG2wOsvFLpqKm08pxZUcxWbqD6uYvGiQjNbK34AYE0P6go5s6h-bVa2xr9e8VUzRXt_wBr-IJTYuXgAk7oi0VMhvHhZBJlYVy/s475/50629448._SY475_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="475" data-original-width="314" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirWik7UooXBH6QkSoORF_ScZGdRMaNCPmiT2i5DxuG0AnkG2wOsvFLpqKm08pxZUcxWbqD6uYvGiQjNbK34AYE0P6go5s6h-bVa2xr9e8VUzRXt_wBr-IJTYuXgAk7oi0VMhvHhZBJlYVy/s0/50629448._SY475_.jpg" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><div class="row" style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><span itemprop="bookFormat">Kindle Edition</span>, <span itemprop="numberOfPages">386 pages</span></div><div class="row" style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Published July 21st 2020 by G.P. I love her books and you definitely have to be patient because she only puts one out about every 2-3 years. So I was beyond excited to get a review copy of The Daughters of Foxcote Manor. </h3><div>Rita grew up with her grandmother, and is beyond excited to get a job as a nanny in London, with a glamorous mistress,, Jeannie, pregnant with her third child. Rita loves the children, but Jeannie is devastated when her baby is delivered stillborn. She never even got to see her, her husband, Walter decided it would be too painful, so she has no closure.</div><div><br /></div><div>Walter decides that his wife and children need to be bundled off to the country for the summer, without him. He puts Rita in charge, and demands that she give him private reports on his wife's mental health - deciding whether she needs to be put away.</div><div><br /></div><div>Rita doesn't want to spy on Jeannie, but Walter holds all the power, and the money, so she has to go along with it. </div><div><br /></div><div>As the summer goes on, Rita has to contend with Jeannie's mood swings, Hera's insecurity and anger towards her mother, a family friend who comes to stay and won't leave, and a baby that was found on a fencepost covered in ants. Yep, you read that correctly. A foundling that Jeannie immediately begins to think of as her replacement baby, and pushes Rita to delay notifying the police.</div><div><br /></div><div>Poor Rita, she is also dealing with a local boy that seems interested in her, but she's not sure how she feels about him. And she can't leave Jeannie in her current situation.</div><div><br /></div><div>I won't give any spoilers, but this book is full of Eve Chase's twist and turns, and I absolutely loved, loved, loved the ending. Once I was done with this one, I went straight into <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Black-Rabbit-Hall-Eve-Chase-ebook/dp/B00XVB94G6/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=black+rabbit+hall&qid=1597892907&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Black Rabbit Hall</a> and loved that too. </div><div><br /></div><div>My only complaint is that I want her to write faster!!!! Like seriously, sell your house without your spouse's knowledge so you can pay off blackmailers because you drove drunk on a suspended license and don't want to go to jail. At what point do you say, what the eff? The answer if you are Bram is, you don't.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span face="" style="color: #181818; font-family: merriweather, georgia, serif;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span face="" style="color: #181818; font-family: merriweather, georgia, serif;">Because he's such a great dad, he doesn't want to leave his kids while he goes to jail. He's traveling across Europe, writing his suicide novel. Turns out his dad also committed suicide, after hitting an old man driving drunk. So Bram decides that suicide has been what his life has been leading to since he was born. Holy God, how about therapy? How about AA? He literally thinks he's the victim in this <span style="caret-color: rgb(24, 24, 24);">scenario, he says sure I made a mistake but if these people weren't blackmailing me, we wouldn't be here. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span face="" style="color: #181818; font-family: merriweather, georgia, serif;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(24, 24, 24);"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span face="" style="color: #181818; font-family: merriweather, georgia, serif;">Meanwhile, Fi, Miss Holier Than Thou, is realizing what her husband has done, and that her new boyfriend wasn't really ever interested in her. He calls her fat, and takes off when he realizes that Bram has double crossed him. So of course she lures him to the apartment and poisons his with alcohol and sleeping pills. He chokes on his vomit and dies. Then she calls one of her best friends to help her, and of course this pregnant housewife does, because she's the one that Fi caught screwing her husband in the playhouse. "I didn't think this is what it would take for you to speak to me again.". These two clean the crime scene and call the cops, framing Bram for the murder since he won't be coming back. Yep, you read that right, #VictimFi just killed a man for stealing her house and calling her fat. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span face="" style="color: #181818; font-family: merriweather, georgia, serif;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span face="" style="color: #181818; font-family: merriweather, georgia, serif;">Bram changed the account number the house money was deposited into and although he knows the police will tie it up for 3-4 years as evidence, he feels like he did Fi right. So he kills himself, because you know, he's such a good dad. And this is his gift to them, that they not be ashamed of him. Or you know, see how a grown man takes accountability for his actions. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span face="" style="color: #181818; font-family: merriweather, georgia, serif;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span face="" style="color: #181818; font-family: merriweather, georgia, serif;">Writing this review has been therapeutic. See, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Bright-Side-Disaster-Novel/dp/B085K92PLM/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+bright+side+of+disaster&qid=1594862663&sr=8-1" target="_blank">The Bright Side of Disaster</a>, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/How-to-Walk-Away-Katherine-Center-audiobook/dp/B07C625BHQ/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Katherine+Center&qid=1594862724&s=audible&sr=1-2" target="_blank">How to Walk Away</a>, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Everyone-Is-Beautiful-audiobook/dp/B001UL7NQC/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=Katherine+Center&qid=1594862814&s=audible&sr=1-5" target="_blank">Everyone is Beautiful</a>. She's writes books that relax me to read and on occasion, make me cry. </p><div>So I was excited to get a chance to read her newest book. Sam is a librarian, she embraces life, and lives big in her small town. Her school is her home and her coworkers and students her family. She's left love behind - the man she loved never even knew she was alive. </div><div><br /></div><div>Then he shows up. Her lost love, but he's lost his color, his joy, his love of life. And Sam is afraid he's going to draw all of the color out of hers. Duncan has been involved in a tragedy at work, and although he's still physically healing, he's not emotionally healing at all. </div><div><br /></div><div>I liked this book because it brought forth some very topical issues. How do we balance being cautious in today's world with how do we live without fear, and embrace joy? </div><div><br /></div><div>My one bit of feedback is that at times Sam didn't feel real - real like other characters have in Center's books. She was trying too hard with her wardrobe, her "uniqueness", it was like she was trying to become Duncan, but it didn't quite fit. It kept making me realize I was reading a book and she wasn't real, which is so unusual for this author. Usually I fall right into her character's world.</div><div></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51168993-what-you-wish-for" target="_blank">Current Goodreads Rating 4.09</a><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><img alt="photo signature_zpsc91ef999.png" border="0" src="http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc454/pianoprincessdesigns/signature_zpsc91ef999.png~original" />A Nurse and A Bookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16529695425968682070noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4739476172404875451.post-32825473036933072882020-06-11T18:15:00.001-07:002020-06-11T18:15:28.850-07:00The Caretakers by Eliza Maxwell<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCuyk06khgxO6mCM7x5GRQFLUmbyoCL82603xNtkTLLX7Z9v5tb1G3vSUhaE0bLee4-w2l4Mi03n82HDJEigGFnwzu8Roxz9ftCdoXmwbttRVdbob20h692wWPnImE_TLzceq_ezwR5aJ9/s383/cover176694-medium.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="383" data-original-width="255" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCuyk06khgxO6mCM7x5GRQFLUmbyoCL82603xNtkTLLX7Z9v5tb1G3vSUhaE0bLee4-w2l4Mi03n82HDJEigGFnwzu8Roxz9ftCdoXmwbttRVdbob20h692wWPnImE_TLzceq_ezwR5aJ9/s320/cover176694-medium.png" /></a></div><div><div class="row" style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><span itemprop="bookFormat"><br /></span></div><div class="row" style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><span itemprop="bookFormat">Paperback</span>, <span itemprop="numberOfPages">318 pages</span></div><div class="row" style="caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Published April 14th 2020 by Lake Union Publishing</div></div><div><br /></div><div><font face="arial"><font size="4"><b>What They Say</b></font>.....<span style="caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); color: #666666; font-size: 14px;">Filmmaker Tessa Shepherd helped free a man she believed was wrongly imprisoned for murder. <br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">What They Say....</span><span style="caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102);">Marnie MacGraw and Patrick Delaney have been in love for a few years now, enough to realize that they are imperfectly perfect together. Still, there are some things that maybe need a little attention. Marnie’s ebullient; he’s brooding. She thrives on change; he prefers stability. She sees marriage and parenthood in their future, but he can’t see beyond the shadow of an earlier tragedy.</span></span><br />
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then an eight-year-old surprise from Patrick’s past shows up on their doorstep, cartwheeling into their lives and spinning things in all directions. While it’s not exactly the change she envisioned, it looks like instant family to Marnie. But Patrick, afraid of being hurt again, retreats further into himself. Suddenly, two very different pieces of a beautiful puzzle find it harder and harder to fit. How can Marnie trust in the magic of the universe when it seems to be doing its best to knock her off her feet?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But some love stories are worth waiting for. And what’s love without a little chaos anyway?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">What I Say....</span>.I haven't book blogged in over a year. Not because I haven't read any fabulous books, but more because my mind just wasn't in it. Too much work stress, too much family stress, I just wanted to hibernate when I was home alone. But as I've crawled out of my depression cave, I kept thinking that there were books I wanted to talk about. </span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I picked this book off of NetGalley because I've read and loved Maddie Dawson's books. I'm not sure exactly what happened with this book, but somehow when I downloaded it, I ended up starting it about halfway through. And I couldn't figure out how we had gotten to this kid being there and the dad being so withdrawn, and a divorce seeming imminent. They kept referring to things that had happened and I thought I just missed something. But I was quickly drawn in even with the weirdness of the disjointed story.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Talk about living your life being distracted! When I finished the book, I went back to the beginning to see if this was a sequel - and found out that yes, it was a sequel, but I had also missed at least half of the book.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Anyways.....I actually enjoyed going back to the beginning and starting the book knowing the ending, although it seemed anticlimactic. One of the best things about Dawson's books is that you never know how they are going to end - they aren't formulaic. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I love an awkward kid story, and Fritzie certainly fills that need for me. As she drops (is dumped) into Patrick and Marnie's life, she's a little untamed, verbally expressive and very uncertain about why she suddenly has a dad, and one who doesn't seem to want to get to know her. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Patrick and Marnie are total opposites, and while Patrick recoils from the connection, Marie dives headfirst into mom-hood and love for all of Fritzie's ways. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Marnie is also full of empathy and compassion for Patrick's ghosts, but she's not okay with him not wanting kids with her, and she's definitely not okay with him emotionally distancing from a little girl who needs more from than he night be able to give.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I moved right into <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Matchmaking-Beginners-Novel-Maddie-Dawson-ebook/dp/B076CJX3YN/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2MYZU6JPIG8GJ&dchild=1&keywords=matchmaking+for+beginners+by+maddie+dawson&qid=1590377008&sprefix=matchmaking+for+%2Caps%2C192&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Matchmaking for Beginners</a>, (it's $1.99 on Kindle right now) which was the first book about Patrick and Marnie - and I suggest you do it the right way, start there and then go to <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Happy-Catastrophe-Novel-Maddie-Dawson-ebook/dp/B07WS9835Y/ref=sr_1_1?crid=32L6PQ7KLPUFG&dchild=1&keywords=a+happy+catastrophe&qid=1590376926&sprefix=a+happy+cats%2Caps%2C187&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Happy Catastrophes</a>, which right now is $4.69 on Kindle - total bargain!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This was the weirdest way to read two books, but it worked out, and I continue to be hooked on Maddie Dawson and all of the feelings that her books bring! Give them a try, I'd love to know what you think. </span><br />

Each family has mysteries of its own, and many secrets must be revealed before the girl’s identity can be known.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;" /><span style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">Once Upon a River</span><span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"> is a glorious tapestry of a book that combines folklore and science, magic and myth. <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>What I Say.....</b>I loved Diane Setterfield's first two books, especially <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Thirteenth-Tale-Novel-Diane-Setterfield-ebook/dp/B000JMKRKC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1543199403&sr=8-1&keywords=the+13th+tale">The 13th Tale</a>. Her last book, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Bellman-Black-Novel-Diane-Setterfield-ebook/dp/B00BSBR382/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1543199403&sr=8-3&keywords=the+13th+tale">Bellman & Black</a> was published in 2013, and since I hadn't seen anything else, this author just kind of faded from my mind. But when I started reading the description of this book, I was taken in just by that and didn't even realize it was Diane Setterfield until I was studying the front cover.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This was very different from her other books, and really unique reading. When a girl is found in the river, brought to a local inn by a stranger, who himself is severely injured, it would seem that he either belongs to her, or that someone in the village would know who she was. It's not everyday that a toddler just goes missing. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">But apparently in this village, there are multiple toddler girls missing or unidentified. The little girl can't or won't speak and doesn't seem to be particularly drawn to any of the families. So who does she belong to? Who should she belong to? No one in the village can agree on these questions.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This book read like it was being drawn by a very talented storyteller. It actually made me feel like I would have preferred to hear it on Audible, if it had the right narrator. And I've NEVER said that about any book.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is a book to curl up with under a blanket on a cold day. You'll think about it long after it's over.</span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><i> Emerson, Georgia, and Marley have been best friends ever since they met at a weight-loss camp as teens. For Marley, it’s coming to terms with the survivor’s guilt she’s carried around since her twin sister’s death, which has left her blind to the real chance for romance in her life. <div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>What I Say....</b>I've been MIA lately. I haven't blogged in over a month. What have I been doing with my time? Oh, nothing big. Just examining my life. NBD.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This has been quite a year. Many blessings have come my way. Things that I have prayed for have come to pass. But all change, even the most exciting, positive change, is change. And sometimes it makes you re-examine your life and who you thought you were.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So, in this middle of my own soul searching, I began reading Good Luck With That by Kristan Higgins. Emerson, Georgia and Marley became friends during a yearly fat camp. Marley and Georgia have stayed close, even becoming roommates, Emerson has stayed in her family home, even after her mother died.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Emerson has a weigh problem. A true problem, and she copes by staying in her house, even employing a sour faced cousin that doesn't treat her very well. But she is excited to suddenly find herself a boyfriend, even if her cousin doesn't approve.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Emerson's physical health becomes impacted by her new boyfriend - I won't give any spoilers. Marley and Georgia are struggling with the guilt that they may not have made enough time for Emerson, along with worrying about what is missing in their own lives. Although they have both been professionally successful, they are still struggling with self esteem and the impact that it has on their romantic lives.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I've read several Kristan Higgins books, and they've all been good, but this one was a little more serious than I expected. But it was eye opening, and made me look closer at my own life.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">

But I'm always up for a debut novel, so I grabbed The Story After Us and went down the road of heartbreak again.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;">Ami has been unhappy for a while. While she and Lars used to be madly in love, daily life, bills and small children seem to have robbed them of any of the magic they felt in their first years. Lars is a workaholic, chasing financial security that seems to be more important to him than participating in his family.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;">Amelia has turned into the stereotypical shrewish wife, nagging when he's gone, then yelling when he's home. The kids are nervous and unsure of their parents, and Ami's business is struggling.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;">But she's still shocked and devastated when Lars says he wants a divorce and walks out the door. Having a traveling husband is hard enough, having a traveling ex-husband is more than she was ready for.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;">The thing I liked about this book was that it didn't go for the fairy tale marriage ending. It was pretty real and a little gritty in the early days of their separation, but then it did go for the fairy tale of work success and new romance. This would be the dream of every newly divorced woman, but it seldom works that way. </span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #181818; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;">Ami didn't have a perfect divorce, but parts of it were pretty close.</span></span></div>
<div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;">What I liked was the portrait of a career woman who has never stopped to ask herself if being content is enough? According to Raney, having sex with your husband twice a week means you have a good marriage. Even if you don't </span><span style="caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102);">particularly enjoy it. <div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I laughed a lot, but I was still sad for Raney at the same time as she totally destructs and reconstructs her life. She suddenly realizes that she isn't even sure what she feels or what she likes in any part of her life. I think it was a great read, and I was enjoying myself right up to the last page. Then I didn't love the last page. No spoilers, but I think the point is that there are no tidy endings if you are living just for <span style="caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102);">contentment anymore.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>What I Say.....</b>I loved the first Kate Reddy book, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Dont-Know-How-She-Does/dp/B005HJS53I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1528948023&sr=8-3&keywords=Allison+Pearson">I Don't Know How She Does It</a>, so I was excited to get an advance copy of How Hard Can It Be? To be honest, it can be very hard. Raising kids, navigating a failing marriage, finishing this book.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was a hard book to read because Kate's life was like your worst day over and over again, but she owned so much of it. Her teenaged daughter sends a picture of her ass across the school internet and her biggest concern is how many likes it didn't get. Her son is busy killing people via video games while swearing with his friends. Honestly, these kids both needed a swift kick. But Kate fawns over them, keeping the butt pic a secret from her husband, doing her daughter's homework and groveling for any crumbs of kindness she can get from her teens.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Her husband is so obviously checked out and having an affair, but Kate doesn't seem to notice his lack of interest in her or their family and his daily disappearances, although he has quit his job to pursue his dream of being a therapist, forcing Kate back to work.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Kate goes back to work at her old fund, and is immediately successful, showing up younger men easily. And suddenly an old flame shows back up into her life, stirring up feelings that she never got over.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So, the book that showed how hard it is to be a working mother ends up making a rich ex-flame the solution to all of Kate's problems. He fixes things behind the scenes just to help her. Blah, blah, blah. How about Kate can solve her own problems?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The other part of the book the I didn't love was the constant description of how old and awful Kate felt like she looked, how her body, her uterus, and her skin were failing her, along with her memory. The constant references to "Roy" as the keeper of her memories was super annoying. I'm the same age as Kate and I don't feel that bad about myself - reading this was depressing.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That may have been why I didn't enjoy this book - it made me feel like my life was over at 47, and the only way to make it better was to find a rich man. No thanks. But i may be alone in my opinion, because it's got a really great Goodreads rating.</span><br />

<div>
<span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Jon is a small, nerd like kid, but he is tightly bonded with cute, popular Chloe, who floats between sitting in a shed with Jon and hanging out with the cool kids, straddling the gap easily. </span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One morning, Jon is kidnapped by a substitute teacher with an obsession with H.P. Lovecraft. Jon reappears from the basement of a mall years later - I do have to admit the nurse in me wondered how a substitute teacher could put a child into a medical coma for years -hint, can't happen. Sometimes being a nurse is a pain when you are supposed to suspend disbelief.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">When Jon comes back, he has a power that causes him to leave home and avoid any close human interaction. I don't want to provide any spoilers, but in this area, the book felt very Stephen King, who I love.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;">Meanwhile, Chloe grows up, reconnects with an old school friend, all while still pining for Jon. And an emotionally detached detective is </span>working to track Jon down to find out why so many <span style="caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102);">people around him die.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I really liked the book, but I found the detective to be a bit of a drag on the story. I didn't have any desire for him to find Jon, and I didn't really understand his obsession or how he made the connections. I also didn't understand how a certain character showed up at the end, but I liked the Pushing Daisies feel of the climax.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>What They Say.....</b><span style="caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"><i>At fifty-three, Maggie Harris has a good marriage and two mostly happy children. Perpetually anxious, she’s also accumulated a list of semi-reasonable fears: falling air conditioners, the IRS, identity theft, skydiving, and airbag recalls. But never once did Maggie worry that her husband of nearly thirty years would leave her.</i></span></span><br />

<i><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On the day Adam walks out the door, everything that makes Maggie secure goes with him. Only then does she realize that while she’s been busy caring for everyone else, she’s become invisible to the world—and to herself.</span></i></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<i><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Maggie cautiously begins to rebuild her life with a trip to Rome, a new career, and even a rebound romance. But when a fresh crisis strikes and an uncertain future looms, she must decide: How much will she risk to remain the woman she’s just become?</span></i></div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>What I Say.....</b>I thought I had read a Camille Pagan book before, but I've searched my Goodreads shelves and my Kindle and my real bookshelves and I can't find anything. Is it a sign of age when you can't remember the name of every book you've ever read??? This is more upsetting than my increased reliance on glasses.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Anyway, I guess this was my first, and I did enjoy it. Maggie is experiencing the phase of life that includes grown children. It's a weird thing when you've focused over 18 years raising a child, keeping them safe, helping to guide their life and hopefully, choices to some extent and you suddenly find yourself expendable and they grow their wings and fly. It really feels like your whole identity is suddenly at risk. If you aren't a full time mother anymore, who are you?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Maggie is experiencing that plus a disinterested husband, a husband who has suddenly found someone else that "makes him feel alive". This puts their plans for a long awaited trip to Rome at risk, but Maggie decides to go by herself, which changes her path dramatically. </span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(102, 102, 102); outline: none;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">From Rome to Ann Arbor, Maggie's life continues to move along a new path. She's growing her independence, she makes new friends who never knew her as a mom and a wife, but she still feels at odds with herself. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>What I Say....</b>I read <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Luckiest-Girl-Alive-Jessica-Knoll-ebook/dp/B00LD1OITO/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1526952885&sr=8-2&dpID=51g%252BRZfScML&preST=_SY445_QL70_&dpSrc=detail">Luckiest Girl Alive</a> a few summers ago and I was completely hooked. I've been super excited to see that it's been optioned for a movie, I can't wait to see it. So obviously, I was super excited to get a copy of Favorite Sister.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'm not a big reality TV watcher, except for Flipping Out and years ago, I watched Keeping Up With the Kardashians, when they were a lot funnier and a lot more normal (hard to believe, right?). But I read Us Weekly and People while I'm floating in the pool, so I feel like I'm pretty up to date on the Real Housewives, without ever watching any of them.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Let's just say reading this book didn't inspire me to become a regular viewer. These women are honestly repulsive. You usually have at least one character to root for, but in this group, there wasn't one person that was innocent. Or even nice. Or ethical. Completely unrootable.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Brett is an old girl on Goal Diggers, but somehow her sister, Kelly has just become part of the regular cast, along with her teenaged daughter. That could cause enough drama, but Brett, the chubby lesbian and Stephanie, the gorgeous erotic author are clearly on the outs. What could these former roommates have against each other? I could see where I was being led, but the shocking twist didn't shock me too much, as I felt like whoever was sleeping with whoever, they all deserved each other.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It's probably a very accurate look at reality television, but it's a very sad look at the state of our relationships as a society. Some women would lie, cheat, betray in every way just to stay on television.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I read it all but it left me depressed, however, I've read a lot of other reviewers that loved it. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What a whirlwind week! I got a ton of ARC's and I'm struggling to decide what to read first. St. Martin's Press is my absolute favorite publisher - I love all of their authors so they are the one's I keep any eye on to see what's coming out and this summer looks like it's going to be packed with great reads!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I had one of my best friends here for the weekend. She traveled from Illinois where it's cold and rainy to sunny Arizona, where we floated around on matching rafts with matching Kindles. We hiked every morning, went out to breakfast, spent the rest of the day in the pool floating on matching rafts with matching Kindles and then went out to dinner every night. Pure bliss and relaxation. It makes Monday morning that much more unappetizing. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><b>What They Say.....</b><i>In <span style="box-sizing: border-box; outline: none;">New York Times </span>bestselling author Beth Harbison's most emotional novel ever, a fractured family must come together at a beach house haunted by the past.</i></span><br />
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<i><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Willa has never fully recovered from the sudden death of her husband, Ben. She became an absent mother to her young son, Jamie, unable to comfort him while reeling from her own grief. </span></i></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<i><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Now, years after Ben’s death, Willa finally decides to return to the beach house where he passed. It’s time to move on and put the Ocean City, Maryland house on the market. </span></i></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<i><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">When Willa arrives, the house is in worse shape than she could have imagined, and the memories of her time with Ben are overwhelming. They met at this house and she sees him around every corner. Literally. Ben’s ghost keeps reappearing, trying to start conversations with Willa. And she can’t help talking back. </span></i></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 12px; outline: none;">
<i><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">To protect her sanity, Willa enlists Jamie, her best friend Kristin, and Kristin’s daughter Kelsey to join her for one last summer at the beach.
